February 23 – World Depression Day was the occasion for a number of events and meetings promoting awareness of the symptoms of this disease, appropriate responses and possible therapies.
Negative thoughts about the future, feelings of guilt, sleep problems, feelings of constant fatigue and lack of energy, pains of various origins, decreased ability to concentrate, lowered self-esteem, feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, suicidal thoughts and behavior are typical symptoms of depression, which according to WHO estimates will be the most common disease in the world by 2030.
Depression can occur at any age, in any person regardless of age and social status. People struggling with the disease have trouble getting out of bed, with personal hygiene, with household chores and with going to work.
Treatment is through pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, and therapy through movement, physical activity, proper diet and relaxation activities is recommended. Nowadays, interdisciplinary therapy, i.e. the combination of psychological, psychiatric and therapeutic services, is increasingly indicated to optimize treatment effects. A psychologist, psychiatrist and occupational therapist can help a patient manage the symptoms of depression and achieve lasting improvements in quality of life.
Confirmed by research and effective in managing stress in patients with depression is virtual reality therapy. Isolation from the world to a relaxing or therapeutic environment can support the treatment and prevention of depression treatment. So how do you take care of your well-being?
In addition to using the support of modern technology with traditional and preferably interdisciplinary therapy, remember to get enough sleep, eat healthy, maintain good relationships with people, avoid severe and chronic stress, make time for the things you enjoy, appreciate every success and practice regular physical activity. Do this, and your well-being will be secured.
Luis Sepulveda was right when he said: ‘A closed door is useless. Sadness cannot go out and happiness cannot enter.” So let’s practice opening the doors of our lives, it’s always worth it.
