According to the World Health Organisation, depression is the fourth most serious illness in the world and one of the leading causes of suicide. Depression is called a disease of the soul and body, it hinders people’s ability to function in society and is a cause of disability and inability to work. The fast pace of today’s life, stress, overload of duties or lack of support from loved ones – all these factors make not only adults, but also children, suffer from depression. Symptoms include not only feelings of sadness, need for solitude, low self-esteem, sleep problems, but also lack of appetite, menstrual disorders, migraines, dry throat, constant fatigue. These symptoms cannot be underestimated, the matter is serious. It is estimated that in ten years’ time depression will be the most common disease of civilisation in the world, overtaking even heart disease.
According to specialists, it is important to combine various forms of therapy in the fight against depression – pharmacology will help remove the effect – i.e. problems with brain functioning, psychotherapy will help deal with the cause of depression, and aromatherapy, music therapy and a large dose of exercise will help relax and gain a more positive attitude. Prevention and mental hygiene are very important. Piotr Wierzbinski, MD, PhD, a psychiatrist, points out that depression can be cured, but it is necessary to remember to establish a life model that is right for us, with the right amount of sleep, having time for oneself and one’s family, cherishing one’s hobbies, paying attention to breaks, holidays, rest, sport and beneficial physical exercise. It also supports the development of technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) in this area. Already, medicine and doctors in some parts of the world are recommending video games to treat conditions such as brain fog, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression or post-traumatic stress disorder. More than 80% of respondents in a survey conducted in the UK, US and China said they stay in a virtual world to relax. 55% of those surveyed believe they are physically healthier as a result of technology (such as apps, health monitoring devices and connected equipment) and 56% believe they are mentally healthier as a result of using the technology on a daily basis.

The VR healthcare industry was worth $1bn 206.6m in 2021 and is estimated to reach $11bn 657.8m by 2028. Our market is also seeing an increase in the share of virtual assistive technology in depression. The creators of VRelax confirm that using the glasses and their app in people with depression, anxiety or bipolar affective disorder can reduce negative moods such as anxiety or depression. The study was originally aimed at people with mental disorders, but their therapists and supervisors have also benefited greatly from the glasses. VR TierOne has successfully used virtual reality to support the treatment of depression and the rehabilitation of people following stroke, pulmonary and cardiac treatment. Psychologists estimate that between twelve and sixty thousand thoughts arise in the human mind every day, and as many as 80 per cent of these thoughts are negative and oscillate around threat, guilt, pain, failure or trauma. The most important thing is to consciously work on balance, to take care of our health, good habits and to avoid being too critical of ourselves. The aim of our APO My Glassess project is to support us in coping with stress and depression, in mental health hygiene, in our discovery of what we can give ourselves for health – as patients and therapists.
